Becky’s Training Philosophy

Teaching is primarily about effective communication. As dog caregivers, creating a clear line of communication is vital for nurturing a relationship based on trust.

Becky Rooke specializes in improving the communication between people and their dogs, building trust in the human-canine bond. Dogs, like children, thrive with clear guidance and boundaries. It takes dedication and effort to establish this foundation, but the outcomes are incredibly rewarding.. Watch your dog connect the dots and anticipate correct responses, transforming the process into an enjoyable experience.

Becky teaches using a science-based, positive reinforcement, and game-centered method to encourage dogs to make good choices. This approach has effectively reduced reactivity while emphasizing the significance of trust in the humans and canine bond. The goal is to establish efficient communication with your dog, fostering a cooperative and mutually beneficial relationship.

The key is to teach dogs to think rather than react impulsively. This is achieved through gradual teaching methods, starting with creating a secure environment for dogs to manage their surroundings safely. Similar to teaching young children, we must initially manage the environment for our dogs until they learn to be responsible with their freedoms. This helps them become cooperative, trusted, and contributing members of the family.

About

Certified Animal Behavior Consultant,

Master Pet Groomer, and Trade Educator

Becky Rooke

Becky holds certifications as an animal behavior consultant, a Master pet groomer, and a trade educator. She currently lives in Sacramento, California with a diverse range of dogs, including those that have been rehabilitated, are reactive, or have behavioral challenges.

Since a very young age, I've interacted with pets and wildlife, forming strong connections. I have a natural ability to bond with animals and have always had a strong desire to share my knowledge with others. With more than thirty years of experience, my expertise lies in canine reactivity, as well as behavior and development in puppies and adolescent dogs.

My career journey began at the Butte Humane Society. Soon after, when animal control moved in and shared our space, I secured a position that allowed me to work for both agencies. I developed my skills in professional pet grooming while dedicating extra hours to managing kennel duties at a local boarding facility on weekends.

Following high school, I began working with a horse trainer as a groom and exercise rider at California state racetracks. Eventually, I transitioned to supporting track veterinarians in horse rehabilitation. I dedicated years to serving as a rehabilitation therapist and surgical technician for both large and small animal veterinarians.

I have bred, raised, and trained award-winning German Shepherd Dogs and Papillons, as stable companions, protection work, and even to preform specific tasks for the hearing impaired. Throughout my career, I have rescued, nurtured, and rehabilitated various animals, spanning cats, birds, rats, fish, farm animals, exotics, wildlife, horses, and dogs.

In 1997, I founded my grooming and training business, later establishing a trade school in 2014 to train individuals professionally in Pet Grooming and Dog Training.

My teaching approach for my professional students focuses heavily on behavior and relationship-building, advocating for holistic animal treatment and fostering clarity in interspecies communication. Additionally, I have adapted my professional programs for teaching the general pet-owning public and am currently devising protocols for co-operative care programs to educate both the public and pet professionals.

I have hosted seminars with renowned industry leaders such as Tyler Muto, Andrew Ramsey, and Elizabeth Gonzales. Noteworthy mentors and specialists I have collaborated with include Elizabeth Gonzales, Kelly Gorman Dunbar, Dr. Ian Dunbar, Dian Olds-Rossie, and other esteemed professionals in the field.

I have practiced for 16 years in the Sacramento Region as a small animal veterinarian and have yet to find a better dog behaviorist and trainer than Rebecca (Becky) Rooke of Sac Dog Central.

She is a top-notch trainer and certified animal behaviorist who gets results fast. She is my #1 choice for referrals. Rebecca has literally transformed the lives of dozens of my clients. From fearful puppies and “out of control “adolescents, to new dog rescues with behavioral problems such as leash aggression and resource guarding, Rebecca will find a solution that works. Her training approach is vastly different from other trainers I’ve worked with, the key to her success is showing our clients that there is a better way to communicate with our pets. Setting up a solid foundation of good communication (often non-verbal) between dog and owner is critical for any successful training to occur.

She educates and empowers her clients, leaving the family with a happier, calmer dog who understands the rules and boundaries of the house. Please consider her for all your professional behavior consultation and dog training needs!

Testimonials

I have been extremely happy with Becky's training and her ability to help owners understand the importance of having a well mannered canine citizen. I have also seen her successfully turn an aggressive dog with bite history, into a charming well behaved angel. If you want your dog trained right, I only recommend Rebecca and Sac Dog Central.

-Starr Craft - business owner; Dogs life boarding at the pug ranch. Rio Linda, CA

When we first rescued our dog, he had severe anxiety and a difficult personality. My wife was distraught and immediately set out to find a dog trainer. She searched the Internet, diligently reading other people's reviews of trainers. We had two sessions with the first trainer - total bust. He was harsh and didn't take the time to understand my dog. Plus, he didn't even have a dog himself - really pal?!

Becky took the time to get to know my dog, understand his quirky cues, without becoming frustrated or pushy with him. She is gentle, but straightforward. She is honest in her assessment of the dog and the owner(s) which helped us understand our issues and expectations of him.

Additionally, she does grooming which was a big plus. We wanted someone our dog could trust to groom him, someone he knew, given his aforementioned issues.

Becky is a true animal lover. Assisting in the rescue process of dogs and horses. She too has a recently rescued dog, amongst her others, with anxiety issues. He has progressed in miraculous steps in only two weeks.

We have used Becky's services now for 6 months. Our family and friends cannot believe the transformation of our dog in this relatively short time. His anxiety has greatly diminished and his personality issues have been dramatically corrected. He isn't perfect but with Becky's help and guidance, he has been able to adjust. He has truly become a member of our family. There is no one I would recommend more for dog training and grooming.

-Josh Roberts - Client

I heard about Becky through my vet 5 years ago. I was in an accident and was having difficulty with my German Shorthair. He became increasing protective and aggressive towards my two labs that also shared the household.

She came to my house and observed the interaction between them all. She then set up a plan with me to work with my shorthair and my yellow lab Buzz.

Buzz was the one being attacked constantly by my GSP. Through coaching and education from Becky, it took us all about a month to be proper educated to a happy cohesive household again.

I have referred several friends and used her services again with my new puppies. She has a great interaction and training class for puppies as young as 10 weeks old. Watching them interact and bond with other pups is awesome to see! HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER.

-Larry Leidelmeyer - Client

I went through the dog training program here, and Becky is a miracle worker. Very knowledgeable and experienced in what she does. Wether you're looking to get your dog trained, or groomed, she knows what she's doing, and is worth MORE than what she charges.

-Crin Long - Student

Rebecca Rooke is a phenomenal trainer's trainer and dog trainer. She trained both of my dogs. She also grooms them. I highly recommend Rebecca at Sac Dog Central for training and grooming.

- Caryl Butcher - Client

Becky was amazing with my deaf Dalmatian Louie! Originally I hired her last minute to watch my two dogs for a week. She sent constant photos and videos of them together and even provided training. Louie has some behavior issues, his aggression when startled was becoming worse. I usually can’t trust my dogs with strangers, but I felt so safe and reassured the entire weekend they were together! I highly recommend her and will be using her for more personal dog training in the near future.

Teaching Dogs To Think!

Becky’s Signature Foundation Series includes fifteen lessons per course, organized into three modules with five lessons in each. Every lesson equips you with the necessary skills to advance to the next one. You can progress at your preferred speed with Becky's distinctive series, enrolling in a single module or a series of modules to complete specific programs.

Group and Private Lessons both cover identical content. However, Private Lessons provide the advantage of concentrating on your specific training goals. They include mid-week homework submissions and coaching support. Certain dogs may not be prepared for group classes initially, which is fine. In such cases, I recommend focusing on building a strong foundation through private lessons, with the aim of eventually transitioning your dog to group experiences.

Puppy Programs

Fast Track Your Puppy’s education

Our Foundation Program comprises 15 lessons tailored to help you reach your training goals.

Are you a new puppy owner feeling overwhelmed and not sure where to start?

Look no further than my Signature Foundation Series.

These lesson modules cover everything from potty training to biting and chewing. With 1:1 private sessions, I can create a lesson plan unique to your specific situation. We'll start by tackling the most critical issue you're experiencing.

Raising a puppy requires a lot of consistency, patience, and time. They grow at an astonishing rate, going from birth to adulthood in just 18 months. Similar to bringing home a newborn infant, puppies will wake you in the night, cry for attention, and food.

Between 2-4 months your little fur baby will become an incredible explorer, seeking out and investigating their environment. They'll start digging, forging, and gravitating towards chewing and tasting everything in their path. By the time they're 6 months old, they'll have already grown two sets of teeth.

Puppies leave childhood behind by the time they're 5-6 months old, becoming pre-teenagers, and at 7 months, they're full-on teenagers. This is when their bodies start creating hormones, so it's essential to have a solid foundation of training in place before this stage hits. Let my Puppy Jump-Start Programs help you get on the fast track to raising a well-behaved and happy pup.

The Puppy Foundation Serries is a package of 15 lessons divided up into three modules.

Course modules are schedule to run consecutively. To ensure your puppy gets the best educational start, we recommend you bundle your modules to ensure you get a spot in the next module while you puppy is under age 18 weeks.

QUESTION:

What if there is No puppy group class on the schedule?

ANSWER:

Puppies grow at lighting speeds, so it is critical we start as soon as you bring your puppy home.

Talk with Becky, we want to help your puppy get the proper early education and there's a lot to get done in-between each milestone, which goes by super fast.

We only need a minimum of 3 puppies enrolled to start a class. You can rally your friends with puppies, and speak with your veterinarians to help us fill a class. If we can’t get three puppies, we can get you started immediately with PRIVATE 1:1 lessons, or we can talk about enrolling Becky’s Boarding School. Yes, Becky will get up in the middle of the night and help to potty train your youngster.

German shepard puppy, eating shoes

Why Puppy Socials?

Puppies grow at lightening speeds taking on average only 18 months to become fully developed into their adult bodies.

Your puppy should be exposed to a variety of sights, sounds, smells, and touch, as well as other animals, mindful children, and adults before age 12 weeks!

The true socialization period for dogs ends at 12 weeks of age. (3 months), after this critical period the puppy becomes aware of novelty, anything new in the environment could now mean potential danger. This is normal dog development, it is there to keep the species alive.

Then at about five months of age, your puppy becomes a pre-teenager, this is when hormonal changes begin to take place.

It is critical to help your puppy get their best start by setting them up for success with multiple healthy exposures to a variety of safe experiences.

We can help develop a puppy’s temperament, (their personality and attitude towards towards others and their environment) through handling techniques within a social space deliberately set up for optimal success with other puppies and people before they reach age 3 months.

If your puppy is older then 3 months, we may have missed the critical socialization period however, we can still help them create better more stable temperaments by exposing them to other puppies in the same age group, while monitoring and encouraging healthy social manners, similar to our children attending a preschool class in an environment set up for optimal learning experiences.

  • Puppy Socials sessions, located inside the pet food express stores.

Three dogs walking with female dog walker

Becky's 15-week Foundation Signature Series

is divided into three modules, each consisting of 5 lessons. Progressing through each module enhances your dog's abilities by building on the skills learned in the previous module.

This program is designed for dogs that are over five months old. The goal of this program is to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to train your dog to become a mindful, cooperative, and well-behaved member of your family.

The course is divided into three levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced, each course module contains five lessons. During the beginner level, you will learn the fundamental skills such as sit, down, stand, hand target, go to a boundary, and how to create impeccable engagement where your dog will be paying attention to you, even when there are distractions. These skills are crucial in building a strong foundation for your dog's training. Additionally, you will learn how to incorporate these skills into your daily routine, while communicating with clarity, you will be teaching them the rules of your home.

My beginner course is a prerequisite for the higher-level courses. The foundational skills taught in this 12-week program are vital in establishing a solid relationship created from trust between you and your dog. By the end of this course, you will have the necessary tools to continue training your dog and preparing them for success in the future.

So, let's get started on this exciting journey of training your dog to become a cherished and well-behaved, cooperative, and contributing member of your family

Once you sign up, you will receive a link to access your first full-length lesson. The WELCOME LESSON, a detailed 45-minute bonus presentation that includes homework. This free lesson covers the fundamental principles of my signature foundation programs. It provides critical details on preparing for class, setting up an ideal learning environment, and goes over three critical concepts that you help you understand how dogs learn.

Group sessions last for 50 minutes, divided into specific segments:

  • The first 10 minutes for introductions/reviews
  • The following 30 minutes for instruction and practice

The final 10 minutes for homework assignments, Q&A, and wrapping up.

  • I intentionally keep class sizes small to ensure optimal learning for all participants.
  • A minimum of 3 students is required to start a class.

Ensure your dog is fully vaccinated or has a clear titer. Consult your vet for recommended vaccination protocols.

QUESTION: How long is it going to take to change my dog’s behavior?

The short answer: Each dog is a unique. Their individuality and background will shape their learning journey, making it as distinctive as your own. I will be teaching you how to become your dogs teacher. The amount of time you focus on teaching your dog will change the timeline of your dogs behavior state of being. Consistency in the daily routines you create for your dog is the key to achieving lasting progress. I will be teaching you haw to help your dog understand what you are asking them to do, then we teach them how to progressive learn, by thinking and making right choices, that will earn them what they want, in place of reacting from instinct. We start this process by teaching skills that will be paired into tasks, that will teach good habits,. Solving unproductive behaviors is a gradual process that may take up to a year or more for lasting changes to be attained. Science says that it takes 67 days to create a new habit. If we learn to add teaching in micro steps for just minutes a day, in 100 days, you should see the changes you are wanting.

Learning is just the start; applying knowledge and observing behavioral changes are vital in training. Think of teaching your dog, as nurturing a child's development but at an accelerated pace. While humans take 18 years to mature, dogs do so in 18 months. If your dog has baggage, especially older pups, or shelter dogs, teaching them involves unpacking old beliefs. Take it step by step, and day by day you'll witness progress towards your goals.

Behavior Modification

Modifying Your Dog’s Unhealthy or Unproductive Behaviors

Understanding your dog's psychology is key to changing their overly reactive behaviors to more mindful responses. Just as with children, dogs need clear guidance and consistent boundaries to learn how to make choices that benefit their life in your home.

  • Behavior Modification programs address anxious, fearful, or aggressive behaviors in dogs, guiding you through transforming your dog's reactivity.
  • By creating a conducive learning environment, you'll enhance communication and strengthen the bond with your dog.
  • The focus is on changing your dog's emotional responses to triggers, by introducing the T-Touch technique, you can help your dog regulate their emotions and exhibit calm behavior.
  • Teaching your dog to seek guidance and support from you encourages them to shift attention from their surroundings and respond thoughtfully rather than impulsively.

Think of Behavior Modification as Trauma Therapy for Dogs

Exaggerated behaviors without a solid structure can lead to household issues, risking safety and health. Owners of reactive dogs may restrict activities due to their dog's increased reactivity, resulting in late-night walks to avoid triggers.

It is essential to manage unsafe behaviors to prevent heightened reactivity and create a plan for improvement. Behavior modification is a gradual process that boosts confidence and effectively addresses issues.

Teaching dogs to manage responses like lunging or freezing is crucial in handling reactivity, focusing on emotional regulation to address fear or frustration.

Tailored for reactive dogs, the program offers self-calming techniques, trigger identification, and strategies for managing reactivity during walks.

The course comprises 15 remote sessions, exploring various tools and techniques like teaching dogs to remain calm and confident, accept wearing a muzzle, and control excessive emotional reactions while strengthening the dog-human bond.

This intensive 8 week course meets up remotely times a week

and includes 15 private 1:1 lessons. with mid week homework check ins and additional coaching support.

Tuition:

Were you aware?

Zoomies are actually a result of excessive unregulated emotional release. This uncontrollable sprinting often originates from a state of frustration, which can be due to feeling unheard or misunderstood, lacking access or knowledge to obtain what they desire, and having built-up energy.

Feeling unheard or misunderstood can overstimulate the nervous system, leading to a cascade of reactions. To address this hyperarousal response:

  • Establish a clear communication system.
  • Set up accountability with defined boundaries.

By doing so, we can reset and effectively manage the dogs' freedom while teaching them proper behaviors to achieve their goals. Teaching dogs emotional regulation, guiding them to respond rather than react, helps them develop the ability to naturally calm and settle themselves.

Cooperative Care Serries

Young Puppies are Welcome

This serries is intended for all ages

Grooming, and veterinary handling, are an essential part of a dog's life, and Cooperative care training can make their experiences in life much more enjoyable.

Teaching your dog to remain calm and still is crucial, particularly during grooming sessions and veterinary check-ups where they may need to stand for a prolonged period. This not only assists in simplifying the vet's tasks but also contributes to a less stressful experience for both you and your furry companion.

Through proper desensitization, dogs can develop a positive association with grooming routines or vet visits, even becoming eager and anticipatory about them.

Desensitization is another key element of cooperative care training. It involves gradually exposing your dog to various handling procedures in a positive and non-threatening manner. This can include gentle touches on sensitive areas, nail trimming, brushing, or introducing noisy tools like clippers without evoking fear or negative reactions.

In essence, cooperative care training is a wonderful method to ensure your dog feels at ease and secure during different procedures. It helps alleviate stress and anxiety, making life smoother for both you and your dog. By teaching your dog to stand still and acclimatizing them to handling routines, you are paving the way for a lifetime of positive experiences.

Fear is an emotional reaction that can be triggered in response to certain situations. When faced with reactivity or when introducing something that may be perceived as frightening, I will show you how to change the unhealthy Conditioned Emotional Responses, and help you teach your dog how to have better emotional regulation.

Reactivity is a common defensive response to potential threats within the environment. It is when the subconscious takes over and puts the dog in a Fight, Hide, or Run state of being. Reactivity it is there for self preservation. However, we can teach them that getting groomed or being handled by the veterinarian is not an actual threat.

You will learn techniques to help your dog change its emotional reactions to scary or uncomfortable situations. This program is customized to meet your specific dog-related goals.

Here are some ideas of topics we can work on to help your dog feel more comfortable.

  • Touching different parts of their body with your hand, brush, clippers.
  • Trimming and filing nails.
  • Using clippers and scissors around the feet, face, and body.
  • Getting in and out of the bath tub on their own without force.
  • Relaxing during a bath.
  • Getting accustomed to being blow-dried with high-velocity (noisy) dryers.
  • Taking medication.
  • Standing still, allowing touch and intrusive handling during examinations, or grooming.
  • Having their teeth and mouth examined.
  • Putting themselves on the scale for a weight.
  • Lying very calm and still for tests.

Why not teach your dog to be cooperative as a happy participant of this process?

A 4-month-old puppy named Hazel is undergoing training to change her reactivity towards being brushed into a positive experience. This was her first assessment.

Benjamin's difficulty in handling stems from a past injury, making it challenging for groomers to handle him. Building trust through a strong relationship is key to overcoming his adversity.

A 4-month-old named Hazel is learning to not steal food. As part of cooperative care training we emphasizes basic communication and manners. This is a sample of a homework submission from a remote lesson.
